Interesting Nature Facts #29 – Mountain Goats

by | Aug 7, 2018

Male mountain goats have evolved an unusual method of fighting in the rut season. Because their skulls and horns are not strong enough to take the impact of head-to-head collisions like their cousins the bison and bighorn sheep, they have developed very thick skin at their flanks. Nearly inch-thick skin enables them to safely gore each other’s backside without causing lethal damage. Historically, Native Alaskan tribes are known to have used these skins from the tail-end of male mountain goats as chest armor.
